The Super Bowl is the biggest game of the year, with over 99 million viewers this year. The halftime show is always a performance to look forward to because of its advanced set and light show. This year, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez shared the spotlight during the 54th halftime show but has caused controversy because the performances provocative nature. 

Many people thought the production was too inappropriate for younger viewers and the show should be more of a family event, and they went on social media to voice their displeasure. On the other hand, many viewers enjoyed the concert because of the representation of Latin- American culture.

Many people are unfairly criticizing J.Lo and Shakira. The show was a tribute to the places that Lopez and Shakira grew up, Barranquilla, Colombia, and the Bronx. Both performers took turns showing their cultures with the dances and costumes that make each special.

First, many people were upset by the performance because of the camera angles and the seductive outfits, but people need to keep in mind that many of the NFL cheerleaders wear those types of outfits to every game to dance and cheer in.

Second, the misogynistic judgment towards women is unfair, especially towards women in the music industry. Last year, during the 53rd Super Bowl, Maroon 5 performed with Adam Levine’s shirt off and with low rise jeans, and no one complained about the performance.

Third, some comments have been racist. Many people have been discussing, mostly on Facebook, about how the Super Bowl is an American event and the show should be put on my artists who are American. However, the lastest bowl was played in Miami, Flordia which is over 70% Hispanic.

The over-sexualization is apparent, however, that is just how the two artists are performing at any other concert. Many people enjoyed it when J.Lo’s daughter came on singing “Let’s Get Loud” and also Shikra’s iconic song “Hips Don’t Lie” was amazing as well.

Viewers need to realize that J. Lo’s and Shikra’s performances were one that they were proud of. Lopez said it the best when she stated, “Both of us are really respectful performers who are moms and have kids and are very conscious of what we do. It was a celebration of women and Latino culture that I think was really well reserved”.
