Today, walking through the halls of Granville High School, many will notice that it is much quieter than usual. One might ask why people aren’t speaking today, and it all has to do with GLSENs national day of silence. Standing for Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network, this foundation is doing its best to raise awareness for an issue that is constantly battled.
Every year on April 17, students across the entire country have vowed to participate in a form of silence, with intent to call attention to the LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. No matter who they are or what they are, many students will be participating in this event.
Founded in 1996, this national day of silence has become known as the biggest school-led event across the nation. The goal of today is to create safer schools for all, no matter your sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The first day of GLSENS National Day of Silence took place at the University of Virginia. By 2008, over 8,000 colleges, schools, high schools and universities have participated in this day event.
Today you will see that many students at Granville are taking action and making a stand towards this issue.
