The UFC held another event last weekend, UFC 272 was a great fight card with exciting and technical matches from top to bottom. 

Jorge Masvidal vs. Colby Covington headlined the card with other big names on there such as Dos Anjos, Bryce Mitchell, Edson Barbosa, and Kevin Holland.

The early prelims saw Umar Nurmagomedov, a relative of UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, extend his unblemished record to 14-0 with a first-round submission by rear-naked choke. 

Along with this Tim Elliot picked up a big win against the surging Tagir Ulanbekov. Tagir is a known wrestler coming from an impressive gym, however, Elliot completely disregarded this and won the fight through his own offensive wrestling. 

Ukrainian Maryna Moroz got an emotionally feel-good win against Mariya Agapova via a second-round arm-triangle choke. This win got her performance of the night and she dedicated her performance to her country. 

Then a string of three knockouts continued from the prelims to the main card. Jalin Turner, a talented lengthy kickboxer with deadly precision, knocked out Jamie Mullarkey. 

To open up the main card Greg Hardy, The Prince of War was knocked out by Sergey Spivak. This will most likely be the end of the UFC’s experiment with former NFL player Greg Hardy. He has lost his last 4 fights and it is unlikely his contract will be renewed.

Following this Kevin Holland landed a massive right hook on Alex “Cowboy” Oliviera, which knocked him down and Holland got him out of there with ground and pound.

Up and coming star Bryce Mitchell battled against veteran kickboxer Edson Barbosa in the next fight. Mitchell looked outstanding, he dominated Barbosa on the ground with his superior wrestling. He won commandingly with a 30-25 decision victory. In the post-fight press conference, Mitchell graciously said he would donate half his earnings to a charity for kids in Arkansas in poverty. 

In the co-main event, Rafael Dos Anjos put on an all-around mixed martial arts clinic. He outstruck and out-wrestled Renato Moicano. Although Moicano showed tremendous heart, many were disappointed that we did not see RDA and Islam Makhachev fight instead. 

Finally, in the fight everyone had been waiting for Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal, these former teammates went at it, but it was Colby’s control and relentless cardio that secured him the unanimous decision. 

Masvidal looked woefully unprepared for Colby’s takedowns and gas tank, which is so surprising considering they were teammates for so long and he knows how he likes to fight. Jorge’s quest for the championship belt is most likely over considering his age and this is his 3rd consecutive loss.

On the other side, Colby Covington has effectively established himself as the second-best welterweight in the world. It is unlikely that he will ever get another title shot against Usman, but maybe a drop to lightweight is in the future for Colby. 

UFC 272 was one of the best non-title fight events in recent years. Exciting up-and-comers Bryce Mitchell and Usman Nurmagomedov put on dominant performances. Flash knockouts by Kevin Holland and Sergey Spivak opened up the main card and grueling wars ended the night with Dos Anjos and Covington getting big wins added to their resume.
