The many hiking trails just around Granville offer a variety of experiences. Whether you’re looking for a challenging workout or an easy stroll, there is a perfect trail waiting for you. Not to mention the amazing views and relaxing nature many paths are sure to lead you to.

Hiking is a great outdoor activity that can be a more beneficial workout than you might think. No matter the season, hiking is a great way to get fresh air and get a break from the busyness of life.

1. Hocking Hills State Park

Hocking Hills state park is ranked number one not only on this list but also on the list of most popular state parks in Ohio. There are many reasons why this is the best place to go out for a hike. There are about 59 miles of trails varying in length and difficulty. Although it is about an hour-long drive from Granville, the many trails can keep you occupied the whole day. Hocking Hills offers some of the prettiest views in Ohio with its famous waterfalls and rock formations. It has trails that are paved sidewalks as well as trails with roots and rocks to navigate around. One of the most popular trails includes Old Man’s cave. This 1.5-mile trail may be busy however the many bridges, waterfalls, and rock cliffs make it a must-see when visiting. Another popular trail at Hocking Hills is Ash Cave. This trail displays an amazing waterfall and is a great option for people of all ages.              

2. Spring Valley Nature Preserve

Back in Granville, there is an amazing hiking option that offers great trails. Spring Valley Nature Preserve has a variety of trails with many sights to see. When visiting, sometimes you might take a path that requires a creative way to cross a Stream. It is good to plan the right shoes in case walking on a fallen tree or stepping on rocks across the flowing water is not successful. However, getting your feet wet adds to the experience and some might agree that it brings fun to the hike. If Experience is not what you’re looking for, Spring Valley also offers the typical hike through the tall grass and trees. There are 45 acres of marked nature trails that never get boring no matter how many visits you make. These trails are great in the winter as the snow coats the trees and icicles form, making it a picturesque place all year round.                                                                                                                           

3. Rising Park

Offering one of the most memorable views is Rising park in Lancaster. Following a short, rocky, and slightly steep trail, you can climb your way to the top of mount pleasant and witness a breathtaking view of the town. This cliff is also a great place to relax or enjoy a picnic while observing the view. Rising park is just a 40-minute drive from Granville and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a great place to go with a group of friends and watch the sunset. This is a unique hiking experience that you should check out.                                                                                       

4. Denison Bio Reserve

Denison Bio reserve is 350 acres including ponds, forests, and a variety of hiking paths. This area is used for research and education for Denison students but can also be enjoyed by anyone looking for a nice hike. There are grass and dirt trails that lead you through forests and display colorful nature right in Granville. These trails could also be used for running. The ponds and streams right along the paths offer relaxing views and there are steeper path options as well as flatter trails. The Bio reserve is a great place to hike and relax on a shady path. This is also a great place to hike in any season.                                                                                                                                                  

5. Sugarloaf Park

A hiking option right in town is Sugarloaf park. This hill is a small site with connected trails leading up to an area with picnic tables and a historic piece of Granville. These trails are beautiful in the fall as the leaves change color. Sugarloaf is a great hiking option that is not very hard of a hike. Great for all ages, it is a cool place to relax. There are no streams to navigate around or waterfalls, however, this historic piece of Granville is a great experience for anyone.
