As prom is approaching in late April, juniors and seniors will start searching for the perfect dress. Besides the fact that they are usually long, there are so many different styles to pick from. The amount of dresses people can choose from tends to cause a lot of stress. One way to make dress shopping more fun and less stressful is to know what style you are looking for before you go. Five very popular styles include:
1. Sequin– If you like a dress that shimmers, a sequin dress would be a perfect fit for you. Sequins are small and flat circles that are usually shiny. They’re sewn onto clothes to make them look fancier. Some dresses are packed completely full of sequins, but others dresses have different sequin designs on them that make them unique. Whether you want full or only partial glimmer, a sequin dress is the perfect dress to make yourself stand out.
2. Ball gown– If you are looking to dress like a princess, a ball gown dress would be the way to go. Ball gown dresses are very big, flowy and tend to have a really full skirt. The top of the dress is usually tight. These types of dresses are worn at very nice events like quinceaneras, but this year especially, they seem like a huge hit for prom.
3. Mermaid– This style is very tight at the top, but flares out toward the bottom. This is said to look like a mermaid tail. Mermaid dresses are supposed to illuminate different body shapes since they are so compressed at the top. The bottom will either flare out right at or below the knees making the dress exaggerate the size and height of your body.
4. Strapless– If you want to show off your collarbones and the upper part of your body, a strapless dress is what you are looking for. It has to be tight at the top in order for it to be able to hold itself up with no straps. The bottom of the dress can be both form-fitting or flowy. You also can find strapless dresses with or without a slit in the leg. This style has been getting a lot more attraction in recent years than it has in the past.
5. Body con– A body con dress is the opposite of a ball gown in the way that the whole thing, not just the top, is tight and form-fitting. Similar to the strapless dress, you can find a body con dress with or without a slit in the leg. If you want to show off the shape of your body then a body con dress is a good fit for you.
Although you may not know what type of dress you want to wear, a great way to start is by going shopping to try on and see what dress styles fit you best.
Four popular stores that are fairly close to Granville are Be Social (Gahanna), Henris (Polaris), Universe Bridal & Prom (Coshocton), and Twirl  (Kenton). If you do not like shopping in stores, there are many different online stores you can shop at too.
