For months we have been getting tons of press about the new movie “Challengers” starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. Reviews have been raving and many have been looking forward to it. The movie revolves around three people who are all obsessed with tennis in different ways. Their lives are all intertwined with each other across the years as they endure triumphs and defeats. The anticipation of this movie comes down to many different things: the actors, the storyline, and the sport.
I had known about this movie since the beginning of 2023 and had been looking forward to seeing it for quite a while. So, going this past Saturday I was prepared for the runtime to be 2h 11m. But by the end of the movie, I felt as though it went very fast. As you watch the movie, from scene to scene, it bounces between different time periods and events. In my eyes, it felt as if the entire movie was being played out as a tennis match with each scene ending with a different person and the next picking up with another. From the music to the clothing, this movie felt very cinematic and exuded powerful emotions. Not to mention how amazing the acting was. I disliked all three main characters and I think that just goes to show how well they were able to fully become their characters.
My overall rating was a 8.2/10 as some things felt just a bit off for me. Specifically, the music when played during intense scenes could have been turned down just a notch so the full feeling of what they were saying could come across more clearly. The other confusing aspect of this movie for me was the ending. I felt even with how thought-provoking it was, the abruptness made me question many other scenes and even the point of the story itself. My favorite part of this movie, though, was how there was not one clear villain. You can make a case for any of the main characters to be the ‘villain’ of the movie, but it was a combination of all three of them.
Overall it is a must-see movie for all the reasons I stated and maybe you’ll have a different opinion when you see the ending.
