Brooke Warehime, commonly referred to as Coach Brooke, started coaching in 2022 for Granville varsity softball when he took on the head coach position.
“I did not intend to coach while I had a child at the school but the circumstances presented themselves and I thought I would see what happened,” Coach Brooke said. After getting the thumbs up from his daughter, he took the position head on with pleasure.
His daughter, Taylor Warehime, was a sophomore at Granville High School at the time, and played under her father for the remainder of her high school career. Most players would feel like having one of their parents as their coach would infringe on their experience, but with Coach Brooke and Taylor it’s a whole different story.
“Having him there for my high school softball career was one of the best memories from high school,” Taylor said.
Coach Brooke is helping many players grow as athletes by the time and effort he is putting into offseason and preseason practices. He has created a special bond with each of his players.
“I look at all of our players as my own kids,” Coach Brooke said.
Every single player has their own special story with him, and he has impacted them in a beautiful way.
“He doesn’t yell at us when correcting something,” sophomore Ainsley Johnson said. “He explains corrections very well and nicely.”
Being able to stay calm, and make sure that players understand what they did wrong while helping correct themselves is one of Coach Brooke’s strong suits. He makes sure that he helps each player individually, and helps boost their confidence.
“Coach Brooke has helped me grow as an athlete by believing in me,” Johnson said. “He has also helped me improve my skills as an athlete.”
Although the team is able to share some laughs with each other during practice, Coach Brooke always makes sure the team stays on track.
Coach Brooke wants to provide an experience that no matter the wins and losses, they feel like they are part of something and they are better for being part of it. He believes that the players and coaches commit a lot of time to each other so it is easy to look at them as family.
Coach Brooke sums up the player to coach dynamic with a few simple words: “Fun. Family. Community. Pride.”
