The BAM staff is celebrating 25 seniors from the Class of 2025! Starting May 1, we’ll highlight one randomly selected senior each day as we count down to graduation. The eighteenth senior is Sophia Sturiano.
What has been the highlight of your senior year?
The highlight of my year was definitely the trip to New York City that the drama club and choir took together. The vibrant sight of the city itself was breathtaking. I can recall just walking around pretty vividly. Learning about the geographical history of the city, especially about the changes post-9/11, underscored the importance of New York in American history. I had a great time exploring the city with my close friends, Lani Casto and Evan Jesse. We got to tour parts of Lincoln Center and view two Broadway shows (“The Outsiders” musical and “Stereophonic”), an experience that cemented why I love theater and writing.
What is your favorite memory of your time in high school?
Going to Creative Writing club as a freshman. My freshman year was difficult. Knowing that every Friday I could meet up with my friends in the club (who were all upperclassmen who I thought were so cool) helped me get through countless weeks.
What are your future plans?
I am going to Ohio University as a Journalism major. I hope to spend a semester of my senior year in Washington, D.C.; I am looking forward to writing for The Post or any of the lifestyle magazines. I also hope to continue doing backstage technical work for theater as well.
What will you miss the most about high school?
I will miss going out for coffee at River Road with my friends during Wednesday late arrivals.
What are you looking forward to after graduation?
I am going on a canoe and portaging trip through the Minnesota Boundary Waters.
What was your favorite school lunch (alternatively, favorite thing you’ve brought)?
The school meatloaf and mashed potatoes. I also loved the egg rolls.
What Portrait of Graduate do you identify most with?
Empathetic. I try to understand where people are coming from.
What was your favorite class?
My two favorite classes were Advanced World Literature during my sophomore year because I really enjoyed the Russian literature unit. My other favorite class was Film and Literature because I got to write film essays.
What was your favorite class project?
My favorite class project was creating a film for Mr. Mullins’ film production class last year. I created a horror comedy short film based off of the Hook-Handed Killer urban legend with my friends.
What advice would you give underclassmen?
Hang around people who make you feel good.
