Zies’ Pieces
January 14, 2016
A weekly addition of news and notes across the sports world, all in the humble eye of Kyle Zies.
NHL All-Star Game
Perhaps the least entertaining event of the NHL year got less entertaining when it was announced that 6’8 enforcer John Scott would be a captain of an all-star team this year. Scott has barely been able to crack an NHL lineup throughout his career and will now be hoisted up and shown to all that this is what the NHL is about. That is, if anybody still watches the game. The NHL flipped to a four team, three on three format hoping to increase ratings and viewers. Looking into my crystal ball, I don’t see it working. Let the game be. Let the NHL play. Quit messing it up with these side shows that generate a few pennies. On with the show.
OSU Football
Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliot, Cardale Jones, Michael Thomas, Eli Apple, Von Bell, Darron Lee, and Taylor Decker all will not be back for the Buckeyes in 2016. That’s not good. Urban Meyer will still have quarterback J.T. Barrett to lead the offense and highly recruited defensive end Nick Bosa (Joey’s brother) to anchor the defense. (Side note: By all accounts, it seems a consensus that Nick Bosa will be better than his brother… That is scary). Other than that, it will be a year of question marks for the Buckeyes as Meyer will be looking at anyone and everyone to fill the ginormous shoes left behind by the 2015 class. I must say though, this is a division 1 powerhouse and no division one powerhouse falls off the face of the earth after one season. Players will step up and the Buckeyes will be right back in the thick of things very, very soon. However, with the rising talent of Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines, the Buckeyes can’t sit too comfortably as many hungry Big Ten teams are right on their butt.
NFL Draft
Speaking of all the talent coming to the NFL, it’s time to look at some top prospects. With the Tennessee Titans holding the first pick and being on the clock, they have their choice of the best prospects in the nation. Ole Miss offensive Tackle Laremy Tunsil is perhaps that best pick and will be able to anchor the line and uphold Marcus Mariota for years to come. Then, the beloved Cleveland Browns will most likely select another quarterback to waste. Sorry, Paxton Lynch but, the Memphis quarterback will likely be the next casualty of the Cleveland Browns quarterback carousel. Pick three, the San Diego (or Los Angeles?) Chargers will be looking to upgrade their defense which brings us to Ohio State’s Joey Bosa who is seen a few notches below J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans and could still be a highly touted defensive end in the NFL.
