Which Thrift Store Is Best For You?

Thrifting has become a popular hobby amongst teens and early adults throughout these past years. Getting second hand clothes is much cheaper than going to a name brand store spending 40 dollars on one shirt when you could be only spending 4 dollars. Some thrift stores that have become essential to second hand shoppers are Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Plato’s Closet.

One of the most popular and well known places is Goodwill. Goodwill has many locations around the United States and often has a wide variety of items. Most goodwills have more of an adult section of clothing and not as many kids’ clothes. These stores also have one of the biggest varieties of clothes because of how well known they are. Many older people know about goodwill so if you are trying to go for a more 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s style, this is the place to go. Goodwills also almost always offer books, furniture, movies, and even electronics. People can go and donate used clothes and items there, but do not receive any cash in return.

Another popular place to shop is Salvation Army. Unlike Goodwill, Salvation Army gives the money they make from selling second hand items directly to people who need the money. They put a large percentage of the money to charities and fundraisers. They also have a wide selection of clothing for very cheap prices. This store does not have as many locations as goodwill but still is a widespread store. I have found that I do not tend to like going here as much as other places because of the fewer options of clothing. However, one thing I have purchased from this store is a warm oversized flannel.

Plato’s closet is a well-known thrift store as well. Plato’s closet does not donate their profits like Goodwill or Salvation Army. Instead  of people donating clothes to these stores, people can bring in their used clothes and get money back for them. Depending on what condition they are in, Plato’s closet may not accept some clothes. Plato’s closet tends to only sell clothing items, but has a very good variety of them. Plato’s closet is perfect for anyone with a more modern style, because more teenagers tend to give their clothes to Plato’s. They also have a very good selection of Athletic wear. I have found many lululemon items there that I have saved countless dollars on. Plato’s closet does tend to cost a bit more than Goodwill or Salvation Army, but still nevertheless has cheap prices.

All three of these second hand stores offer an individual shopping experience. I have found that Goodwill has been my favorite place to thrift because of the large selection of clothes that it offers. Depending on the day you thrift can really determine how successful your experience is. So don’t get discouraged if you come home empty handed, you probably just got unlucky and went on a day where there was nothing good. The nice thing about second hand stores is that the selection of items is always changing, so you will never run out of options and you can always look forward to finding something new each visit.
