The district purchased hundreds of solar glasses to distribute to students for last month’s solar eclipse. Now the the eclipse is over, those glasses are no longer needed. To prevent the waste of resources, the district, in conjunction with various groups, such as United Way, 4-H clubs and the Kiwanis, is collecting solar glasses to send to Latin America.
In Latin America, there will be a solar eclipse in August. The solar eclipse at this time cannot be observed in the United States. For this reason, donating sunglasses will help protect the environment by reducing the number of sunglasses that are discarded.
Most importantly, donating sunglasses like this is not just for environmental protection, but also for a cause that can help children who cannot afford sunglasses have a special experience they will never have again in their lives.
“The project is an amazing way to not only reuse an item, but to provide a very cool experience to children in countries that lack a lot of basic needs,” assistant principal Katie Beach said.
Students can donate both used and unused solar glasses in the office.
