OPINION: Top 5 Modern Rock Bands

OPINION: Top 5 Modern Rock Bands

BY Liam McCamish (’20)
No matter what type of music you listen to, one of these bands will satisfy your musical needs. Some bands in this list are more relaxed with a message of positivity, while others are louder and more upbeat with more of message aimed towards break-ups, arguments, and scandals that a lot of people can relate to.

1. Royal Blood, is an English two-person band with Ben Thatcher on drums and Mike Kerr, who sings and thrashes his guitar. These two make it sound like a full band. The level of thrash these two bring to the table has been compared to the level of thrash Nirvana had. With their latest of their two albums “How Did We Get So Dark,” they have started touring around Europe and soon will come to the United States. They have not officially said anything about another album in the making, but their social media has posted pictures of the two in the studio.

2. Arctic Monkeys. This classic group of four from the UK ganged up in 2002. Ever since then the group has come out with 6 albums, the latest one being “Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino,” which has a lot more of a relaxed vibe to it than their previous albums. My favorite album of theirs is “Favorite Worst Nightmare.” It’s upbeat with a little trash in some songs. My favorite song from this group is “Nettles” a very thrash and upbeat song.

3. Them Crooked Vultures, This group if full of rock legends; “Nirvana/Foo Fighters” Dave Grohl on the drums, the Queens of the stone age guitarist and vocalist John Homme, and Led Zepplin’s bassist John Paul Jones. This power group is only temporary but in their time together they put out 5 songs from their only album “Them Crooked Vultures” with songs like “No One Loves Me & Neither do I” and “New Fang. With all these big Rock and Roll legends, they have a little bit of everything from this group.

4. Bring Me the Horizon, the largest group on this list, formed in 2004 in the UK. They have 7 members total. This band is known for having some of the biggest and craziest concerts, with orchestras and choirs backing the band. It’s more of a hard rock group but still has some more relaxed songs spread out throughout their albums. Their latest album is “That’s the spirit” my favorites in that album being “Happy Song” and “Avalanche.”. Not only does this group make great music, but they have also sent money from some of their concerts to cancer research.

5. Greta Van Fleet. The group of 4 formed in Michigan in 2012. They just recently gained a lot of notoriety for their album “From the Fires.”. This has a big old time feel. Their latest album dropped October 19th, 2018 names “Anthem of a Peaceful Army. I have only listened to about half the songs, but so far I think that it’s more relaxed than their normal tone but so far it sounds great. If you like late 90’s sounding music this is a band you have to listen to. Probably one of the most promising looking bands in 2018.

If you’re interested in any of these bands these are the closest upcoming concerts, that still have tickets available.
