Cross country is in it to win it

BY DESTINY BRADEN

Things are only going up for the Granville girls’ cross country team.

Every week there is an OATCCC poll, where all of the coaches in Ohio vote on which team is the most likely to win the state meet. For the first week the team was ranked 6th with 119 votes. The second week they were ranked 3rd with 141 votes. And last week, they were ranked 1st with 173 votes.

Just this year, the varsity team has broken the school record for average time twice. It was first broken at Tiffin with a time of 19:37, then broken the week after at Galion with a time of 19:18.

Success like this doesn’t come from nowhere. “I am excited about the recent success because it is so deserving,” said head coach Chrisi Rogerson. “Their success is a result of all their diligence and hard work.”

The team has come in the top ten in the state for the past five years and doesn’t plan on ending that streak now.

“It was expected,” said assistant coach David Agosta about the team’s recent victory. “As with any sport or endeavor, you must expect to be great and plan accordingly.”

The coaches and runners have been following this idea and planning according. The achievement isn’t random. This year, Agosta said that team has “added a few more VO2 energy system workouts to allow the team to compete at a potentially elevated level.”
