The new student body president Owen Costa is reshaping student engagement and focusing on a new strand of initiatives focused on transparency, inclusion, and student-led decision-making. The changes are marking a shift in leadership priorities, signaling a new chapter in student government at the school.
Costa’s quick impact is making a lasting impression beyond boosting school spirit; he is also making meaningful changes unlike any other student body president before him.
“He’s been hungry,” Principal Scott Hinton said. “He’s constantly asking me these ways he can improve his job for you all.”
Costa’s efforts are already shaking things up. Students are speaking out more, sharing thoughts they might have kept quiet before and feeling like their voices actually matter.
“He is connecting with students and urging them to keep the spirit up,” Hinton said.
In addition, Costa has welcomed any student with a passion for making a difference, even creating a Google Form to gather ideas and take real action toward improving the school.
“I’ve been looking at the suggestion box for things we could implement, and I’ve gotten a lot of good suggestions,” Costa said.
Costa came in ready with a goal of bringing more students to school sporting events. Costa has been working with the new student section leaders and they found a solution to gain momentum in a new pre-game fashion to urge students to go to more sporting events. Now there are new pregame events called “Deck Nights” that have been bringing students to the games and have been making the school’s student section larger.
Each Deck Night has a theme and a pregame party where high school students get free food plus free admission funded by the high school athletic department, and all they have to do is participate in supporting the team of the night.
“The Deck has been more exciting and loud than past years,” senior Lindsey Wildman said.

It’s clear Costa’s leadership has been sparking new excitement.
“I see a lot more energy throughout the school and throughout the student section and a lot more people showing up to everything,” sophomore Parker Costa Said.
Furthermore, Hinton plans on working with Costa to extend the fun into the winter months too.
They plan to “Liven up the end of February and early March, because we realize that Spring Break is 3-4 weeks away at that point.” according to Hinton.
Costa plans on working with the student advisory board and the student section leaders to keep the hype coming all year long.
