Director Sara Rodocker announced the upcoming season at the Sept. 2 Drama Club meeting. The club will perform two plays– “Leaving Iowa” and “Outsiders”– and the musical “Newsies.”
“There were a lot of people in attendance and great energy,” Rodocker said.
The first play for the fall show is called “Leaving Iowa” is a comedy about an adult son going on a journey with his mom, dad and sister.
“The play has the convention of a lot of flashbacks and memories to his childhood and road trips with his parents,” Rodocker said ¨There’s a lot of humor about family vacations and that sort of thing.¨
The musical for the winter show is called “Newsies.” Based on the film written in 1992, the musical shares the story of the 1899 New York City’s newsboys strike.
“I hadn’t really known too much about ‘Newsies,’ so I watched it,” junior Andrew Busack said. “And it’s great. The music’s good. The plot is amazing. The characters are fun and lively.”
The second play for the winter show was originally supposed to be “The Three Musketeers” but was changed later to “The Outsiders” due to a lack of scripts.
“I am super happy they made that change,” Busack said. “When they revealed that they switched it to ‘Outsiders’ I can’t say that I wasn’t completely ecstatic.”
Busack who previously played Carlos in the “Descendants” musical shares who he would like to audition for and his excitement for the shows.
“Obviously I’d love to be Pony Boy but that might not happen because there’s lots of talent in the auditioners,” Busack said. “I actually would be happy with any of the Curtis brothers, Soda Pop. They’re all great characters.”
Junior Aubrey Baus who also played a lead role in last year’s play “Back to The 80s” is looking forward to the season.
“I’m going to audition for the sister in “Leaving Iowa” Baus said. “I don’t really know what it’s about that much, but the main role is this boy going back and looking at his memories of road trips with his family. So it’s him, the sister, the mom, and the dad.”
Along with the plays and musical, the Drama Club is bringing back another club that they hope will be a big success.
“This year we have a group that is working to put together an improv club as a part of Drama Club,” Rodocker said. “We did the improvs last year, and they were a hit.”
Excitement about the shows are building as the fall show approaches.
“I was super excited at the show announcement meeting,¨ Busack said. “And since doing more research on the shows, I can only say my excitement has gone up.”
