Granville High School senior Annie McCracken is taking her talents to the next level as she prepares to continue her athletic and academic journey at Indiana University. A dedicated pole vaulter and leader both on and off the track, Annie has made a lasting impact on Granville athletics and her community.
What made you choose Indiana University for college?
Indiana was different than any other school I looked at. They truly cared about their athletes and each other and it showed. The coaches also took time to get to know me as a person, not just an athlete. The school is also absolutely gorgeous and had a great kinesiology exercise science program too, which is what I’m looking to major in. It was a big school, which I knew I always wanted to go to, but had a small town feel.
What’s your favorite memory at Granville?
My favorite memory at Granville would probably be the football games. My friend Audrey and I have gone together all of high school and it’s definitely something I will miss. Also probably last year’s LCL 4×4, which was Clara Bethel to me to Melina Dennen to Avery Ogg. Avery and I lied to Melina and Clara that we needed to win this race to get the title even though we were up by 30. It also is such a cool feeling because everyone stands at the last 100m of the race and cheers you on. It is truly such a cool experience.
How did you first get into pole vaulting?
Before I did track I was a gymnast for 9 years, and when I first signed up, Coach Rogovin previously knew I was a gymnast and put me in.
What’s something outside of sports that you’re passionate about?
Outside of my sport I am passionate in my faith. This past summer I was a middle school Wyldlife leader and it was such a blessing to do so. I still am one and host middle school Wyldlife at my house and attend Younglife.
Who has supported or inspired you the most?
My coaches for sure, but specifically Coach O’Neill who completely changed the sport for me and I wouldn’t be here without him. Also my dad. My dad was a football player in college and ended up playing at West Point. He helped me with the mental, physical side of the sport and the recruitment process which can be very challenging. He helped me with everything I needed and pushed me more than anyone. Whether it was speed, lifting, or correcting my jumps, he was on me to help me succeed. He helped me push away the anxieties that I had and challenged me to achieve my goals.
What are you most excited for as you look ahead to college?
I’m looking forward to taking the next step in my athletic career while pursuing a great education.
Favorite thing to do with friends around Granville?
I enjoy just hanging out and talking with my friends whether it’s at someone’s house, with food, or a drive. I also enjoy getting Chipotle and playing pickle ball with my friends.
What’s one fun or unexpected fact people might not know about you?
An unexpected fact people may not know about me is that I learned how to do nails or that I was born in Florida.
