The WWE seemed to be on top of the world a year ago. Everyone from longtime fans to new viewers watched Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns face off in a generational battle at Wrestlemania 40, but recently things can’t help but seem like they’re going downhill.
Now advertisements on the ring I can accept. Celebrity appearances? Understandable. I’ve enjoyed the product over the years, but the current state of it right now is just purely unacceptable.
The WWE has seen a big drop in quality, and an even larger drop in morals.
WWE under TKO and Triple H has become focused on revenue and viral moments over actual good long term storytelling. They have made it clear that the fans are not in their best interest by changing the Wrestlemania 42 location from New Orleans back to Las Vegas and even booking Wrestlemania 43 in Saudi Arabia.
It’s not even the locations and greediness either, the actual shows their producing also aren’t very up to par. For starters, using Brock Lesnar and continuing to promote him, while he’s a part of a sexual assault trial is bad enough, let alone having him squash John Cena in the latter’s retirement tour.
CM Punk feels more like PG Punk now, and he just won the World Heavyweight Championship in a total stinker of a match with the most shoved-down-your-throat wrestler (or “superstar”) on this planet, Jey Uso.
This years War Games match was a total let down as well, Jey Uso doing his entrance again mid match? Somebody please tell me how this lame gimmick got over in the first place. The finish included a mysterious figure wearing an all-black outfit with a ski mask climbing up the cage, hitting the curb-stomp on Punk, and then leaving the cage. For some odd reason they still haven’t revealed who this mystery wrestler was, fans have speculated names like Austin Theory and Montez Ford. Anybody but Seth Rollins is good, but I really hope it’s Theory since WWE have continued to drop the ball with what could be the next face of the company. Then the overhyped nothing burger of a match ended with the worlds most awkward stare-down with Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, and CM Punk.
Though there is still some good to be found in the current product, unfortunately the only way to fix the current state of the WWE is to stop giving them our money and invest it in other promotions. AEW is going strong as of now with their best year in what feels like a long time, so maybe you can find some enjoyment in their shows. This is probably the only way WWE is gonna learn, and they’re already struggling to sell tickets and get ratings. Maybe one day they’ll change their ways
