How old were you when you started karate?
I was 12 years old when I started.
What made you want to do karate in the first place?
When I was younger, way before I started I had seen a video of a girl doing karate and thought it looked super cool. I went to a dojo to see what it was like but then COVID happened and I didn’t get to start till after it ended.
What belt are you?
I just earned my black belt last year.
What is your favorite move?
My favorite move is definitely a roundhouse kick or tornado kick.
What makes karate important to you?
I love the life lessons you learn like self discipline, confidence, respect, and resilience. I also love the community. I have made so many friends through karate that I train with and see everyday.
When did you start teaching karate lessons to kids and why do you enjoy it?
Just recently, in the past year or so, I have started helping my sensei teach class. I really enjoy seeing all of the younger kids’ passion for karate and how they have grown in their skills.
Do you see yourself still doing karate and or teaching it in the future?
Yes, I want to continue doing karate for as long as I can. One of my goals is to become a sensei one day. I really enjoy teaching kids karate skills and the life lessons that come with it.
Who has been your biggest supporter while doing karate and why?
My parents have been my biggest supporters during my karate journey. They have paid for all my classes and gear, drove me to and from karate, and cheered me on at tournaments. I am so grateful for them.
Who has been your biggest inspiration in karate, why?
My sensei has been my biggest inspiration. He’s always supported me, pushed me to do my best, and helped me grow not just in karate but as a person. I love learning from him and hope one day I can be as amazing at karate as him.
