J: All right, well I’m just gonna get straight to the chase here. So how did you get into ice skating?
H: Um, well, I learned to skate before I could even walk. Uh, I was, like, three when I started. It was really bad at walking, so my mom, who loved figure skating, she’s a coach, wanted me to be able to skate with her. Oh, okay, so what was it like learning for the first time? Um, I can’t really remember too much from the years. I know that I was very independent and didn’t want to do what I was told to do. Um, so I’d often off in my own little world.
J: Okay, so often you’re in the world. So were you maybe not paying attention during learning or maybe you weren’t, your head wasn’t exactly in the game?
H: Um, no, it was more of what we were doing, was boring, and I wanted to do harder stuff.
J: Okay, so what is this harder stuff?
H: Um, well, when you’re in the basic levels, you’re learning, like, the stuff you have to do for the class. And I wanted to keep going, learn harder stuff once I mastered the easy stuff in my class.
J: So do you think that maybe part of that ambition leads to leads you to where you are now?
H: Um, probably, yeah.
J: So besides your mother, is there anybody else you look up to in ice skating? Maybe some people you haven’t met, like a LeBron James of ice skating
H: Um, not specifically. I don’t actually watch ice skating a lot. I know a lot of my friends do. I know people that I look up to, like, that I have face to face interactions with every day, like, one of my coaches, Abby Agent, she went to Granville. Um, she is definitely someone that I was looking to.
J: So what is it like for you on the rink? Like, talk about the maybe the speed, the intensity, how you’re feeling.
H: When I skate, I would say I feel a pure joy. Um, it is my passion to do. I feel the most free one on the ice.
J: So, what advice would you give to any people who want to get in ice skating or want to start?
H: Um, I would say the scary thing. It’s okay to fall down. I fall down all the time. everybody falls down. Like, don’t be afraid of looking like an idiot, because if you’re looking like an idiot, you’re probably doing something right
J: Okay. I think that concludes everything that I wanted to ask.
