What is your take action project focused on? Throughout the year we have focused on building a mobile chicken coop, that is not only improving the land lab, but tying together the whole Granville School District. Right now we are focusing on the finishing touches of the build, as we have just acquired the last of the materials.
Why did your group choose this focus for your project? We knew we wanted to have a project paired with Land Lab. One of our AP Environmental class slogans is “diversity means stability” and we wanted to accomplish just that. On top of that, we had several members of our group that had past experience with livestock, specifically chickens.
What has the project process looked like up to this point? From the beginning of the year our project consisted of lots emails, meetings, and planning periods. We met with Jeff Brown for overall approval of the project, we first received funds from Granville PTO, before shortly setting up a meeting with Kiwanis where we received the rest of the funding we needed. And so, in early March, we went ahead a picked up our nine chicks. They are extremely healthy, interactive, and energetic. Lastly, we are constructing the Chicken Coop outside the goat pen at GIS, to eventually move it inside of the fencing area.
Why is your project important (especially environmentally)? Our project is important because it increases stability within the land lab. It is impossible to achieve stability without first having diversity, which is why we chose to add another species to the land lab.
