The “ice bucket challenge” has splashed back into the view of teenagers.
The first bucket challenge raised money and awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). It has now been reimagined by students at the University of South Carolina in partnership with Active Minds, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and resources. They have brought the challenge back faster than ever, now as the USC Speak Your Mind Ice Bucket Challenge.
In addition to the challenge, they started a funding page #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge in hopes of raising $250,000 for mental health resources.
Not only has the Ice Bucket Challenge made a huge appearance in tags and mentions but the USCMIND Instagram page has grown from 30,000 to 776,000 followers as of now. The challenge reached Granville on Saturday April 20.
“It’s always good to see friends and family participating to benefit the greater good,” said freshman Riley Umphlette, a challenge participant.
the challenge is already improving mental health by “bringing smiles and fun,” according to sophomore Mars Herreman.
