The district hired a sports media club adviser to level up the new scoreboard during upcoming games.
The district unveiled the scoreboard in August, which allows for graphics, advertisements and live video. The new sports media adviser, as well as the sports media club, would coordinate the content and run the social media for the athletic department.
“[The club and new adviser] are going to help with creating all that content, hopefully do interviews, and help create graphics that go out on the scoreboard and on the score tables in the gym,” assistant athletic director Jessica Wills said.
Athletic director Josh DeVoll and Wills hired Scott Turner to be the new sports media adviser this month. He works as a videographer and video editor for a local Columbus TV show. He also worked with Olentangy’s lacrosse and field hockey teams to improve their social media. Most impressively, he worked as a public affair specialist for the U.S. Coast Guard.
“[Working with the Coast Guard] is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my entire life,” Turner said. “It has afforded me all kinds of opportunities. I do a lot of interviews, so I travel around and I interview people and tell their story.”
Turner says he is extremely passionate about media, and he is grateful for the opportunity to share that experience with Granville students.
“It’s not just about the buzzer feeding shot, it is about the human element and the emotion that goes beyond a lot of those things,” Turner said. “So what happens when it’s quiet is just as important as what’s happening when all the action is going.”
The athletic department purchased the $500,000 scoreboard in August using private funds.
“It was all raised by private funds, so donors and the booster club, so none of it actually came from the district,” Wills said. “I think had we asked the district to pay for part of it, then there probably would’ve been backlash.”
There are several other exciting plans for the scoreboard and this new position.
“I think we’re going to be able to do more things with it than we’ve done so far, so we have the ability to do a sideline camera, and we plan on doing community movie night,” Wills said. “We think people appreciate having that out there.”
The club will have its first meeting after school on Thursday, Feb. 6 in the library.
